College Office Update (Week of 9/13)

Hello Class of 2015 seniors!

In this post, I’ll be covering the most important deadlines this fall.   Be sure to jot these dates in your planner.

Upcoming Sessions/Workshops
  • Informational CUNY session, Monday, 9/22  8th or 9th Pd and Tuesday, 9/23  7th or 8th Pd, Upper Auditorium: You’ll get a brief overview of CUNY, the application process, receive an admissions profile, and learn next steps!
  • ·         CUNY Application Workshops:
o   EVERY Wednesday in October, 8th and 9th Pd (location to-be-determined)
o   We will take you through the application online and answer any questions
o   ** In order to attend the CUNY Application Workshop, you must have filled out the“Making the CUNY List” worksheet (you will receive this in the informational session) and have your CUNY list approved by me. This means you must stop by the office BEFORE the CUNY application deadline on October 31st!**
·         Senior College Planning Night, October 1st from 6-7:30pm: You and your parents are invited to learn more about the college application process and how to prepare for your senior year

Tips and Tools
  • SAT registration: If you missed the October deadline, sign up for November. Remember that colleges take your BEST COMBINED score from two tests! You may receive up to two SAT fee waivers, however, if you fail to show up to the test, it’s still considered as a fee waiver used. With that said - be sure to attend and arrive to the test no later than 7:45am with your admissions ticket and photo ID in hand. Map out your route to the test center in advance – being mindful of bus detours or changes in train schedules.
  • Scholarships: You may search for scholarships at websites such as www.fastweb.com and www.highfivescholarships.com. Scholarships should NEVER cost money. If a mailing you receive seems like a scam, see your advisor before giving out your information.
  • College Representative Visits: In the coming months, many admission representatives will be visiting the College Office! These include CUNYs, SUNYs, and private colleges. These representatives will most likely be the individuals reviewing YOUR applications. Meeting face-to-face with them is very important! See a calendar of upcoming representative visits on the College Office door. Our next rep visit is TOMORROW – SKIDMORE COLLEGE (located a few hours from NYC in upstate NY) is visiting us during 5th Period.  Skidmore is an awesome college that offers a ton of unique majors and really amazing financial aid. Please attend if you’d like to learn more! http://www.skidmore.edu/.
Thanks to those who have already dropped by and filled out a CDI College and Career Readiness Enrollment form for senior year. If you haven’t done so, please come by (and spread the word!) during a free period or after school to pick up a form and say hello. We look forward to meeting with you!
Best,
Fatimah and Marina
